When you know and understand what is happening at any given moment, the chances of a mistake are minimal. And most importantly, there is no panic, fear or doubt. You just KNOW what you need to do and how to do it right. The advice I got at the beginning of my yachting journey was very valuable - learn everything, sail with different skippers and crews, on different boats, and you'll have a varied experience. Try sailing in different weather conditions, then you'll understand how things really are. Read the theory, but spend more time in practice. Good advice from a smart and experienced skipper.

Safety on board + MOB practice day
Safety on the boat is the most important thing!
Whether you're sailing with family, going on a bachelor party with friends, racing or going across the ocean, the most important thing is that all crew members are safe, alive and in good health.
And while the primary responsibility for safety lies with the skipper, knowledge of basic boating safety principles is vital for all crew.
We will look at both the crew member's and the skipper's side.
What we will do on the practical day:

- How to stay safe in bad weather conditions.

- Gas usage/cooking on the boat
- Unobvious dangers: seasickness and dehydration
- MAY DAY situations: fire, injury, person overboard, etc
- PAN PAN situations: boat or mast breakdown, etc.

Basic Navigation theory / work with charts
Navigating a boat is absolutely, positively nothing like navigating a vehicle on land. There are no roads, few signs other than basic navigational markers outlining major channels, and you may have to contend with fog or an inability to see land or landmarks. In fact, it takes years of accumulated knowledge and advanced learning to become a marine navigational expert. But don’t let that deter you - just as long as you have a firm grip on the basics, learning how to navigate a boat in most inland and nearshore waterways in normal weather conditions is a piece of cake.

Docking and mooring practice
Before going out on the water, any skipper must understand how to moor back. Although the general gist of the process is quite simple and straightforward, in practice many have great difficulty with mooring.
And most importantly, most young sailors are very nervous and anxious about the process.
To be confident and calm and be able to dock the boat in any situation, you must first understand the mechanics of the process and then repeat it many times!

- we will swap positions to clearly understand the whole process from all sides
- We will remember and practice the basic knots needed when mooring
- We will go over the details of mooring in strong wind and different currents circumstance
- We will explore options for mooring alone and with a crew.

Passage planning includes a complete description of the boat's passage, which is usually prepared by the skipper. This should be done to ensure that the boat follows the necessary routes to reach the destination port. Passage plan is identifying potential problems or hazards along the route.
The skipper must understand the conditions and peculiarities of the water area in order to reach the desired port safely.
But it is not enough to make a plan, you need to be able to determine your position during the seiling and correct the route if necessary. Navigation and the ability to make a good passage plan is a vital skill for a skipper.

| WHAT BOAT DO WE HAVE? We are the proud owners of two Beneteau First 40’s which we have optimised to provide the very best performance possible. The new two-spreader racing masts are stiffer and lighter than the original cruising versions which improves righting moment and performance. We are also installing new, deep-draft keels which will improve lateral resistance and enhance the upwind and reaching performance of both boats. These boats are now great racing yachts with good IRC ratings making them highly competitive. Whether it is club, national or international races we are sure that our boats will give you a performance edge over other charter options. |
