Globe 40: Round the World race

Dates: 26th June 2022 - mid-March 2023
Sailing Round the World has to be one of the original dreams inherent in any passion for the sea. It is a founding myth, which goes far beyond the mere sporting context; it is an accomplishment, a quest for self-fulfilment in the discovery of others.
What sailor, what offshore racer, what enthusiast of the sea, has never dreamed of sailing from the North to the South Atlantic, traversing the Indian Ocean, making for Polynesian shores, rounding Cape Horn and spending Christmas in Tierra del Fuego, drinking up the exhilaration of north-east Brazil and concluding a voyage in the balmy winter of the West Indies?

The GLOBE 40 is a race, which is accessible to both informed amateurs and professional skippers. It is a Round the World, which combines competitive performance, adventure and travel, a Round the World whose course takes skippers off the beaten track and offers up some unique stopovers, a Round the World on a craft that is accessible both competitively and financially.

In total then, an Odyssey spanning approximately 30,000 nautical miles and 140 days at sea for the first boat. The Great Circle company has been commissioned to carry out a climatological study of the course.

The Bridge Sailing Team

Our goal, of course, is to win the race and come first! It will be a great competition between the best sailors of the world.
Afanasy Isaev, Skipper

Skipper Afanasy and co-skipper Oliver grew up in very different countries a few thousand miles away, and in a very different time. But what they grew up with in common was sailing. From a young age they both were captivated by sailing, and as their skills and knowledge progressed, their competitive spirits drew them to sail racing. This competitive spirit mixed with a affinity for adventure lead Afanasy to buy a Farr 80 grand mistral called Weddell, and compete in the Rolex middle sea race in 2015. It was in this race that our skippers would meet, as Oliver joined as crew on board. They quickly became friends and made plans to continue sailing together all around the world. This partnership continued over the next five years, taking them across the North and South Atlantic, Pacific and Southern oceans.

Accruing some 100,000 nautical miles together. As well as Competing in numerous regattas, offshore and ocean races (The arc 2015, Caribbean regatta season 2016, 2019, cape town to Rio 2017, Transpac race 2017, Rolex Sydney Hobart 2018, Antigua Bermuda race 2019, Rolex Fastnet 2019).
We have put in the time, and now we want to show the world what we can do!
Oliver Grant, Co-skipper
During their experiences together, they have encountered and overcome almost every problem you could face on board a yacht, from becalming in the doldrums to violent hurricanes in the southern ocean. With sails, rigging and electronics failing them in the most treacherous conditions, their ingenuity, skill and perseverance have been thoroughly tested, and they have prevailed still wanting more. This same tenacity has seen them to some promising results, such as the Antigua Bermuda race 2019, where they finished 2nd over the line. And in the Rolex Fastnet race 2019 where bold tactical decisions allowed, the now aging farr 80, to finish a competitive 49th over the line in a fleet of over 300, and against some of the world's fastest and newest yachts.

With the experiences they have shared, they've built a trust between one another which has inspired them to take their racing to the next level, and embark on this double handed race around the world with the aim at competing at the very highest level of sailing in the not so distant future.

The boat - Rock'n'Roll

Class 40 boat #90, designed by Owen Clark, built in Cape Town by Jazz Marine
The Class40 is a monohull ocean-oriented racing yacht which has been increasing in popularity in the past 15 years. Now regarded as one of the most exciting classes to be involved with, due to it high performance and the boats longevity of performance. Whilst the class progresses with new technologies and designs, class rules regulate the speed of growth to maintain a large competitive fleet and incur fewer redundancies due to increases in the price of construction.

The original goal of the class was to make offshore races accessible to amateur sailors. The success of the class has moved it beyond these parameters, with more and more professional sailors attracted to it.

Part of the attraction of this class is the simple and stringent box-rule, which keeps costs down. It is a class of both amateurs and professionals. There are an ever-increasing number of boats being built in France and abroad.

Owen Clarke Design have been involved with the development of Class 40's since the rule’s inception back in 2005 and have now produced thirteen custom/semi–custom and five production boats, since 2006. OC designs have won or placed on the podium in events such as: Class 40 Mondial/ISAF Worlds, Route du Rhum, Round Britain and Ireland Race, Normandy Channel Race, Atlantic Cup, Bermuda Race, Bermuda 1-2, Marblehead-Halifax and the Transat Jacques Vabres.

Owen Clarke Design produces stunning, reliable, easily driven racing yachts with a competitive edge. OC also has years of experience cooperating with other designers to extend their capabilities.
